The Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship has nine core elements that help one understand what they are, namely: Digital Access, Digital Commerce, Digital Communication, Digital Communication, Digital Literacy, Digital Etiquette, Digital Law, Digital Rights and Responsibility, Digital Health and Wellness, Digital Security. In this blog post I hope to go through them and critically discuss them.
Digital Access
According to the IIE (2019, 20) refers to all of society participating in the digital environment in one form or another. There are issues regarding access in our society namely : socio-economic; access; infrastructure; content; skills and gender, but as a society we are working to eradicate them because access has become sort of a right in the 21st century.
Digital Commerce
This is whenever we do something to any online activity that has to do with trade through digital channels according to the IIE. (2019, 143) This could be buying and selling things on Amazon or calling an Uber.
Digital Communication
Most forms of communication these days are online. Digital communication is "the electronic exchange of information online" according to the IIE (2019,56)
Digital Literacy
From my understanding according to the IIE (2019, 35) Digital literacy is being able to use anything online with regarding the use and manipulation of information and also being able to use technology that can do the same. This links with information and solution fluency because in today's time digital literacy is a critical skill that a lot of companies need you to have.
Digital Etiquette
This is, according to the IIE (2019, 78), how were supposed to behave online. Etiquette is the unwritten rules of politeness. with regard to digital etiquette or "netiquette" this is becoming more and crucial in today's times as there are more and more people online that do not know how to behave online and this becoming more and more evident because of the flame wars that we see on line. People are disregarding everyday societal norms because they view themselves as anonymous on the web, but with new measures that are being implemented to mitigate thus people are behaving.
Digital Law
According to the IIE(2019, 96) it is “defined as the electronic responsibility for actions,
deeds which is either ethical or unethical.” This is becoming more and more important in today's time as we move more and more into an all online society where digital law is going to be needed.
Digital Rights and Responsibility
These are our "online" privileges and freedoms according to the IIE (2019, 87). Every country on the earth has a constitution and people in that country accept that they have to follow it. The digital space is no different, countries these days are starting to include and expand their constitutions to include digital rights because with the fourth industrial revolution being so prevalent they need to be at the forefront of safety to their citizens.
Digital Health and Wellness
This is using digital resources in a way that is mentally and physically beneficial in today's connected society. This is the IIE(2019 ,131) says it is but it can be further expanded to using online resources in such a way as not to harm others, including verbally and emotionally.
Digital Security
Digital Security is being able to use online resources without any interference of any kind according to the IIE.(2019, 112)
